Material separation of black silt
The leading American dredging company has employed e4sciences|Earthworks to produce sonar images to evaluate the removal of black silt (non-HARS) above Pleistocene clays and Mesozoic rock in Newark Bay. We produced four orthosonographs and bathymetry analyses for each acceptance area. Low reflectivity (dark brown to black) indicates the presence of black silt. We obtained roughly 10 cores per acceptance area to validate the interpretation of black silt presence and thickness. In this first acceptance area, e4sciences|Earthworks and the dredging company performed test digs to test the sonar interpretation. The dredging company returned to the area and removed any layers of sediment in question. We reviewed the methods and results with the USACE operations and produced an overview explaining the methodology for their approval.
